NBA star Steve Nash and his wife have decided to separate.

Nash issued a statement to Life & Style magazine late Friday announcing he and Alejandra Amarilla have decided to split after five years.

In the same statement, Nash confirmed the birth of the couple's third child, a son named Matteo.

"This is a bittersweet moment for my wife and I; after five years, we are now in the process of dissolving our marriage. While we have lived separately for the past several months, we remain firmly committed to raising our children in the most positive, nurturing way possible," he said in the statement, posted on Life & Style's website. "I want only good things for Ale going forward; right now, I'm focused on ensuring that our children understand how much they're loved and adored by us as they continue to adjust to these changes. I would ask that their privacy, and ours as a family, be respected as we move forward. This will be my only statement on this."

The couple also have twin daughters, Lola and Bella, who were born in 2004.

Nash, a native of Victoria, B.C., is a point guard for the Phoenix Suns. The 36-year-old has been named NBA MVP twice. He formed the Steve Nash Foundation in 2001 to help children get healthy by taking part in physical activity.
