Tom Izzo might be on the verge of making a lot of people outside of Cleveland unhappy.

A report out of Cleveland on Wednesday indicated Izzo, the longtime Michigan State bench boss, will be the next coach of the Cavaliers.

Waitingfornextyear.com reported that Izzo told his MSU charges in a meeting Tuesday that he will take the plum NBA job.

However, later reports suggested, though the players were convinced Izzo was leaving, the departure is not yet a done deal.

According to The Associated Press, Izzo told his players at MSU that he has talked to the Cavs and implored them to "concentrate on their classes and workouts to get better on and off the court.

Report surfacing early Wednesday said Izzo had been in contact with potential veteran NBA assistant coaches and had been sending out feelers about what it is like to coach LeBron James.

Earlier the Chicago Bulls talked with Izzo, but did not offer him the job, which eventually went to Celtics lead assistant Tom Thibodeau.

Speculation is the Bulls did not offer Izzo either the amount of cash or the control the Cavs are allegedly ponying up.

Izzo joining the Cavs could be a free agency game-changer.

Hiring such a well-regarded coach would make it easier for the Cavs to bring back James, the premier available free agent, as well as another star such as Toronto's Chris Bosh.

An official announcement from Izzo is not expected soon. He would -prefer to allow his current players to finish the school year.

Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert is a MSU graduate and a fan of Izzo's.

"It would take the best player in the world to get Izz away from Michigan State, where he is so rooted," said ex-Spartan and Raptor Morris Peterson.

"I can't see Izzo going if LeBron doesn't stay. If you look at the college coaches who tried to break into the NBA and couldn't do it, they've been on bad teams."

MSU pays Izzo more than $3 million US, while the offer from the Cavs has been rumoured to be $6 million.
