New Ottawa pro basketball team removes Twitter account after controversial pick of TomaHawks as team name
By JON WILLING, QMI Agency

Naming Ottawa's pro basketball team

OTTAWA - The Ottawa-no-longer-TomaHawks are in full damage control mode Wednesday morning.

The new National Basketball League team held a City Hall press conference Tuesday to announce its name and unveil the team's logo. Hours later, its Twitter account was pulled down and the owners were apologizing.

The media tour has continued Wednesday morning, with TV and radio appearances to try to explain the rationale behind the naming -- and what will happen now.

The sudden about-face comes after a heap of criticism for choosing the name of a weapon commonly associated with Native Canadians. If you follow social media, you would have quickly known the name was not going to go over well with some very vocal critics.

The Ottawa TomaHawks Twitter account was removed Tuesday night, just hours after the press conference. The team website also removed all references to TomaHawks.
