Chris Leroux will start against Mexico in Canada's second match in the round-robin on Saturday. It's a step in the right direction for trying to prove he can be a major-league starter.

GOODYEAR, AZ. - Player agent Fred Wray tried to get his client to invoke the 24-hour rule.

But Chris Leroux would hear nothing of it.

The 24-hour rule applies to baseball players, as well as everyone else: Never make a phone call to complain when angry. Wait until the next day.

But Leroux couldn’t. After he had been activated from the disabled list by the Pittsburgh Pirates last July, then sent directly to triple-A Indianapolis, the 28-year-old right-hander immediately phoned general manager Neal Huntington anyway.

Then he went out and did what he told Huntington he could do. He had success as a starter.

Leroux, from Montreal, starts for Team Canada on Saturday against Mexico, after Shawn Hill opens the third World Baseball Classic on Friday afternoon against Italy.
