NASHVILLE -- The Cleveland Indians talked to the Blue Jays about acquiring outfielder Alex Rios yesterday.
The Jays and the Indians did not have a match.
The San Diego Padres are interested in acquired right-hander Josh Towers to pitch in spacious Petco Park.
Meanwhile, the Jays are open to listening to trade offers for right-hander A.J. Burnett.
"If we went down that road we'd have to get an arm in return," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said.
How often have the Jays been approached by teams on Burnett?
"We haven't had any contact from teams on him," Ricciardi said.
And in other news ... the Blue Jays:
- Lost right-hander Ty Taubenheim on waivers to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Taubenheim made one start for the Jays this season and was 4-7 with a 6.37 earned-run average in 19 games, 16 of them starts at triple-A Syracuse.
- Are interested in free-agent Matt Clement with a low-risk (for the Jays) high-reward contract (for Clement.)"
"We're interested," said Ricciardi, who didn't think he would have to offer guaranteed money, "but he hasn't pitched in a couple of seasons."
Clement, who underwent shoulder surgery in 2006, has plenty of suitors which indicates a guaranteed offer may be in the works.
The San Diego Padres, the Indians, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies are interested in Clement.
- Are talking to "a couple of clubs" about acquiring a back-up catcher by trade or re-sign free agent Sal Fasano, which means both Curtis Thigpen and Robinzon Diaz will begin the season at triple-A Syracuse.
"Hopefully," Ricciardi said, "Diaz will be ready by June or July."
- Were in on veteran reliever Troy Percival, who signed a two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. "He did better than what we could offer him," Ricciardi said.
