When the baseball season releases him at last, whether that’s Wednesday night or a month from Wednesday, Joe Maddon has his vacation already mapped out.

The Tampa Bay Rays manager will point his brand-new, $300,000, 40-foot recreational vehicle toward Key West and he, his wife Jaye, their boxer Winston and their Great Dane Athena will begin an odyssey that will eventually take them to the family homestead in Long Beach, Calif. Stops along the way could include Hilton Head, S.C., New Orleans and Marfa, Tex.

“The idea of hitting the open road is kind of an exciting thought,” says Maddon.

First, however, he has another road to travel, starting tonight in Cleveland where his Tampa Bay Rays will tussle with Terry Francona’s Indians for the right to play the Boston Red Sox in the American League Division Series.
