Giants manager Bruce Bochy mum on Game 4 starter

ST. LOUIS - San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy hasn’t announced that he’ll send his starter in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series to the mound with a bag over his head, but it’s coming to that.

Matt Cain will be on the hill for the Giants in Wednesday’s Game 3 against the St. Louis Cardinals’ Kyle Lohse. As for Game 4, only the Shadow and Bochy knows.

And neither are tipping their hand.

Pretty well everybody believes that Bochy will settle on Tim Lincecum, but Bochy wants to keep his two-time NL Cy Young Award winner on the shelf and available for bullpen duty in case Cain implodes early in Game 3.

If that happens, he can turn the ball over to Lincecum on Wednesday and go with Barry Zito for Game 4.

But that’s just speculation.

Bochy? He’s keeping mum.

“No, TBA is where we’re at right now,” he replied when asked who would start Thursday. “Matt Cain is going tomorrow. We’ll announce that (Game 4 starter) after the game tomorrow night.”

He was then asked if there is any reason why he hasn’t named his Game 4 starter yet.

“I have not named a starter, really, because I don’t have to right now, that’s my biggest reason,” Bochy said. “And we’ll see what happens tomorrow.”

It was a pretty lame answer, but if Bochy wants to keep his cards close to his vest and have Lincecum ready to prop up Cain, so be it.

We’ll just have to wait until tomorrow.
