The Los Angeles Dodgers continued Friday to build for the stretch run, acquiring pitcher Joe Blanton from the Philadelphia Phillies for a player to be named or cash.

The 31-year-old right-hander had an 8-9 record with a 4.59 earned-run average in 21 games with the Phils this season. In 10 career playoff games, he is 2-0 with a 4.02 ERA.

The Phillies recalled pitcher B.J. Rosenberg from triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill the roster spot.

The Dodgers also have obtained outfielder Shane Victorino, infielder Hanley Ramirez and reliever Brandon League during the past 10 days.

Blanton appeared to be headed to Baltimore in a trade earlier this week but the Orioles apparently balked at picking up the $3 million remaining on the pitcher's contract.

PHILS WAVERING ON LEE

The Phillies have 48 hours to decide whether to keep left-hander pitcher Cliff Lee or try to trade him.

Lee was claimed Friday -- by the Dodgers, sources told multiple media outlets -- after the Phillies placed him on waivers. The Phils apparently made the move hoping he would clear waivers and thus allow them to trade him.

Philadelphia has several options: It could let Lee -- and the $92 million remaining on his contract -- go to the team that claimed him; it could withdraw the waivers, in which case the Phillies would be stuck with Lee for the rest of the season; or it could work out a trade with the claiming team.

BRIEFLY

The Washington Nationals have acquired catcher Kurt Suzuki from the Oakland A's in exchange for minor-league catcher David Freitas, 23.

Suzuki, 28, hit .218 for Oakland this season with one homer and 18 RBI ... A's outfielder/designated hitter Seth Smith has been placed on the disabled list because of a strained hamstring. The 29-year-old has a .237 average with 11 homers and 39 RBI. The A's called up outfielder Michael Taylor, 26, from triple-A Sacramento ... The Cleveland Indians have designated outfielder Johnny Damon for assignment. The Indians have 10 days to trade or release the 38-year-old ... Reliever Francisco Cordero has been moved to the 15-day disabled list because of an inflamed toe. The 37-year-old was acquired July 20 in a trade from the Toronto Blue Jays. There have been reports this week of slumping Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton having off-field issues. It could be the issue is Hamilton's inability to quit chewing tobacco, CBSSports.com reported.
