Canada loses to Cuba

Jimmy Van Ostrand had three hits but Canada fell 9-5 to Cuba at the Pan Am Games in Lagos de Moreno, Mex., Thursday night.

Cuba built a seven-run lead through three innings.

Canada now has a 1-1 mark heading into Saturday's game against Venezuela and a victory is needed to advance to the next round.

Edmonton's Mike Johnson was charged with the loss, allowing five runs in 1 1/3 innings. North Vancouver's Scott Richmond relieved and allowed a bases-loaded homer.

Brock Kjeldgaard, of London, Ont., had two hits including a double, while Jonathan Malo of Joliette, Que. also had two, including a triple. Skylar Stromsmoe of Bow Island, Alta. also doubled.

Kyle Lotzkar of Delta, B.C. will start against Venezuela.
