The injury to Edwin Encarnacion, his premature return to the lineup and his inability to regain form has all but undone whatever hope there may have been for a Blue Jays recovery in this season now gone wrong.

It is hardly a coincidence that the best baseball the Jays played this season happened in the month during which Encarnacion was scorching hot.

When he left the Blue Jays on July 5, victim of a base-running setback, the Jays were a half-game out of first place in wild-card contention.

Since then, the season of opportunity has been lost: In the 48 games he first missed and then came back with a stroke of uncertainty, the Jays have had the worst record in the American League East. The return of Encarnacion has not been a return of any kind at all.
