TORONTO - Of all the potential free agents under the Blue Jays umbrella, the most crucial to get back in the fold is Melky Cabrera.

Switch-hitting, high-average hitters with the potential to drive the ball in all the gaps, as well as hit upwards of 20 home runs, do not grow on trees. He is not a star in the field, but adequate. Bats like his will show well during free-agency season.

The Blue Jays took a chance on Cabrera two years ago by offering a two-year, $16-million contract to a guy coming off a drug suspension. It wasn’t an entirely popular signing and it became especially so when Cabrera spent much of the year looking like he had aged 15 years. It wasn’t until late in the season when a benign tumour was detected on his spinal cord. Once it was removed and he went through an off-season of rehabilitation and exercise, he emerged a new man this year.

He has been everything in 2014 that they expected they were getting in 2013 and there is little doubt they’d like to see more of it in 2015 and beyond.
