Edwin Encarnacion was scheduled to start a rehab assignment Saturday night in Dunedin with the class-A Florida State League Blue Jays against the Tampa Yankees.

Encarnacion, out of the Blue Jays lineup since July 5 with a right quad strain sustained in a game at Oakland as he tried to beat the back end of a double play ball, remains tied for third in the American League home run race despite having missed 29 games. Jose Abreu of the White Sox leads with 31, followed by Baltimore’s Nelson Cruz at 29. Encarnacion and Boston’s David Ortiz both have 26.

If all goes well and Encarnacion has no further setback, he’s expected to rejoin the Jays early in their next road trip to Seattle, Chicago and Milwaukee.

Adam Lind’s chronic sore back caused him some discomfort after his two-hit Thursday rehab assignment with the Gulf Coast Blue Jays.
