HOUSTON - Brett Lawrie began a rehab assignment with class-A Dunedin on Friday, starting at second base.

Lawrie has not been in a game since suffering a fractured finger in his right hand June 22. He has missed 34 Blue Jays games.

Jays manager John Gibbons said that during his rehab, Lawrie will play both second and third base and that when he makes it back to the big-league club he will play most of the time at second base. Juan Francisco and Danny Valencia will platoon at third base.

Gibbons said that if there are no setbacks, Lawrie may be able to return in a week.
