CINCINATTI -- Given they were former teammates with Cincinnati, nobody is more pleased with the success that Edwin Encarnacion has had with the Blue Jays than Joey Votto, the Reds all-star first baseman.

“I’ve got to tell you, ball players have some filthy language between each other and I sent him a text, ironically he was out on the field playing, it was May 29 or 30, I’m not sure which day and I sent him a derogatory text telling him to hit me two home runs today,” Votto recalled. “He didn’t answer me back until the second home run in the seventh inning and it may have been No. 16 or 17 or how many he hit (in May). He responded back that night and I asked for some hitting tips and he was kind of coy about it."

“He’s a teammate that I am still really fond of and I’m really proud of how well he’s done. There’s some guys you tune into and you almost, I don’t want to use the word awe, but you watch and you think to yourself: ‘What do I have to do in my swing to get to that point’ and that May stretch certainly was like that and he and (Jose) Bautista are really fun guys to watch.”

Encarnacion’s big seasons, of course, have come with the Jays, not the Reds.
