TORONTO - There are times when you need to take a giant step backwards, pause, and realize what it is you are seeing, maybe for the very first time.

Maybe the only time you’ll see it.

Edwin Encarnacion, doing what Mickey Mantle has done before, and most of us only know the legendary Mantle’s name from history. We know him from books and from movies and because he had the perfect baseball name. Mantle had his greatest season in the summer before I was born.

You have to be in your 60s or older now to have seen him in his prime, when baseball was rarely on television, both pinstripes and pictures were in black and white.

So here is Encarnacion, on HD television every night, traded by Texas, traded by Cincinnati, given up on by the Blue Jays twice, let go in Oakland, doing what most of us have never seen before, going home run crazy with 16 in May.

The month is over. The pace won’t and can’t continue. But we need to take a moment for perspective, to realize, comprehend that we’re seeing something we will never see again.
