TORONTO - The "Dustin McGowan as a starting pitcher" experiment is over.

Citing McGowan's difficulty with his recovery time between starts, the Jays have returned McGowan to the bullpen.

McGowan started and took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks in four innings. He's now 2-2 with a 5.08 ERA.

Earlier, he had complained about losing velocity after 60 pitches. In eight starts he has averaged less than five innings, (39 innings). A year ago he was effective, working 25 2/3 innings in 25 games with a 2.45 ERA.

Was it reasonable to expect McGowan to hold up when he had not started since 2008? The move to the bullpen gives you the answer.
