You didn’t have to be a wide-eyed, pre-season optimist to think that the Kansas City Royals might have a chance to be a playoff team this year.

Coming off a year in which their pitching staff was one of the best in baseball and their only significant loss was Ervin Santana, it stood to reason because, well, how could their offence be much worse? With the likes of Alex Gordon, Billy Butler, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakis and Salvador Perez, how could the 2013 Royals have scored only 648 runs? And now, with upgrades such as Omar Infante at second base and Norichika Aoki in right field and batting leadoff, plus some turnaround by the guys we just mentioned, well, it had to be time for the Royals to take dead aim, if not at the perennial Central Division powerhouse Detroit Tigers, then certainly a wild card slot.
