As Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons sat chatting in the home team office at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, bench coach DeMarlo Hale wandered in and placed a scouting report on the desk.

“This is the guy who will be sitting here answering your questions when I’m gone,” Gibbons said with a laugh, the joke, of course, being that it’s just a matter of time before he gets fired.

“Nope, I’ll be gone with you John,” answered Hale.

It’s a Saturday morning, four hours before the Jays’ final exhibition game of 2014, and Gibbons is in a good mood.

The Jays defeated the New York Mets the night before in the bottom of the ninth, and Gibbons has a sense that his team is coming together just in time for Monday’s season opener in Tampa Bay.

But he also knows that if his club stumbles out of the blocks, like last year, he probably won’t be around for very long.
