DUNEDIN, FLA. - Ryan Goins will open the season as the Blue Jays second baseman.

Jaws were not dropped when the words tumbled out of the mouth of manager John Gibbons this morning as Goins really had no legitimate rival for the job.

After being called up last season on Aug. 23 to replace the injured Maicer Izturis, Goins, a shortstop by trade, proved to be excellent defensively while hitting .252 in 119 at-bats.

Coming into spring training the job was his to lose. The Jays weren’t worried so much about the way he hit and all he had to prove was that last season’s defence was no fluke.

Due to the fact that Goins gives the Jays the best defence at second since Roberto Alomar and the hitting depth in the other positions, they really aren’t concerned with how he fares at the plate.

Goins received a re-do in his batting stance from new hitting coach Kevin Seitzer. He lowered his hands to allow him more time to react to pitches.
