PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA. - Dustin McGowan remains in the hunt for a spot in the starting rotation.

All those stories you read yesterday where manager John Gibbons said he’ll open the season in the bullpen — forget ‘em.

While Gibbons is convinced that a bullpen spot is the best place to park McGowan and keep him healthy, others in the organization led by general manager Alex Anthopoulos and endorsed by pitching coach Pete Walker would like to push McGowan further to see if he can handle the rigors of the rotation.

To that end, McGowan will be getting another game where he will be stretched a little more. On Thursday the right-hander went three overpowering innings and 45 pitches and next Tuesday against the Pirates the hope is he gets up to 65 pitches.
