DUNEDIN, FLA. - Nobody was more perplexed and concerned about Melky Cabrera’s diminished physical capacity last year than Cabrera himself.

But in the moments after he learned that the pain in his back and legs that had seemed to age him by 20 years in a matter of months was the result of a tumour on his spine, the Blue Jays left-fielder’s concern turned to naked dread.

“When they told me I had a tumour, I thought I was going to pass away,” said Cabrera on Friday, speaking through interpreter Luis Rivera, the Blue Jays’ third-base coach.

“I thought I was going to die and leave my kids behind, my family. I know I’m going to die someday, but I wasn’t ready for it, yet.”

Nothing at all seemed amiss when Cabrera reported to training camp last spring after signing a two-year, $16-million contract with the Jays.
