DUNEDIN, FLA. - It’s tough enough to be behind the plate trying to catch R.A. Dickey’s lethal knuckleball, but Erik Kratz’s Blue Jay debut quickly turned into trial by fire.

Not only did he have to deal with first-inning nerves on Thursday, but he immediately had baserunners to deal with and also had to overcome a run-scoring passed ball.

“It wasn’t perfect,” Kratz admitted. “I had the anticipated anxiety that I thought I would. Just the idea of trying to relax, getting a different visual. I thought it went well. There’s plenty of room for improvement but a lot of things I’ve seen in his bullpen sessions, it was good to see them in the game.

“I caught myself not breathing a couple of times. Just trying to relax, thinking about what’s going on in the game.”
