DUNEDIN, FLA. - As the Blue Jays struggled out of the gate in 2013, barely two weeks into the season, fate delivered a crippling haymaker when Jose Reyes, their leadoff man, shortstop and all-round spark plug, was levelled by a broken ankle. Neither he, nor the Jays ever fully recovered from that.

Tuesday, Reyes and his thousand-watt smile were back in Dunedin ready to start anew and try to deliver a different script.

“Last year was a tough year, not just for me but for the whole team,” said Reyes. “This year, I feel like I’m 100% and back to normal. I can’t wait to get out on the field and do what I do best to help this ball club to get to where we need to go.”

Reyes got back into the lineup in less than three months — more quickly than expected — but by that time it was too late. The season was essentially lost.
