DUNEDIN, FLA. - The contrast was hard to miss.
A year ago on reporting day, the Blue Jays spring training clubhouse was abuzz. Reporters were marshalled in waves, waiting for a piece of R.A. Dickey and Dickey himself was riding a unique wave of celebrity.
The acclaimed CBS flagship news show 60 Minutes had dispatched a crew to follow his every move. National baseball writers from all the major media outlets were on hand to chronicle not only the reigning National League Cy Young winner’s first days as a Blue Jay but to inspect the fabric of an organization widely predicted to be playing deep into October for the first time in 20 years. It was a bit of a zoo. People on the fringes of the scrum couldn’t hear a word.
