TORONTO - There was no pressing reason for the Blue Jays to present anything to Mariano Rivera Thursday night.

Their real gift was presented in increments throughout his 19-year Major League career. The real prize for Rivera from Toronto: The Jays roster.

For every one of Rivera’s seasons in the American League, the New York Yankees have been better than the Blue Jays. Not slightly better. Not a few games better. Crazy better.

There wasn’t that one fluky year that got turned upside down when the Jays were knocking on the door. There wasn’t that one year to remember, where shockingly everything went right.

There was nothing like that at all the past 19 seasons.

There was just watching and admiring from afar. When we had questions, they had answers.
