With his long history of arm trouble, Dustin McGowan is an easy guy to root for, as he rebuilds his major-league profile after missing, essentially, four full seasons. So, when he says he wants to prepare himself to compete for a job in the starting rotation next season, well, it’s just another challenge you hope he can meet.

But there is no certainty that the Blue Jays, with so much time and money invested in McGowan, will allow him to return to starting.

“We’re not sure,” said manager John Gibbons. “We’re giving it some thought. In the back of your mind you’re always wondering if he can hold up doing that. That’s where most of his injuries came about and he’s really thrived in his (relief) role right now. So, we’ll see. I know that’s what he wants to do but, what’s best? We’re not sure yet.

“You never know how the rotation stacks up next year but it will be something we’ll continue to look at over the winter. Maybe he could fill a hole we need there. But in the back of your mind you have to be aware that’s led to a lot of his injuries, too.”
