TORONTO - Not so fast. The Blue Jays kept the waiver wire busy, claiming Mauro Gomez from the Boston Red Sox. Gomez is a first baseman who will report to triple-A Buffalo.

Gomez, 28, hit .275 with two homers and 17 RBIs in 37 games for Boston last year with a .746 OPS. Last year, at triple-A Pawtucket, the right-handed hitter batted .310 with 24 homers and 74 RBIs in 100 games with a .960 OPS. The year before, he was at triple-A Gwinnett in the Atlanta Braves system.

Mauro Gozzo is a name that lives in Jays history. Gozzo was a combined 12-1 at double-A Knoxville and triple-A Syracuse in 1989 when he was promoted to the Jays.
