The first game of the season is a time of new beginnings, good starts or bad.

There isn’t a player who wants to go into Wednesday’s game without a batting average.

And, as the saying goes, you can’t win them all — unless you win the first one. Speaking of that first one, here’s a look back at opening day 2013, right from the start ...

1:32 p.m.

Joseph (Elevator Joe) Bednarz is at work pushing buttons, smiling, greeting people ... happy in his job in Year 20.

“Paul Beeston and Stephen Brooks left Monday and Mr. Brooks asked if I could be in at 1 on Tuesday. What can I do? Say no to someone important like Mr. Brooks?”

I tell him I say no to Brooks, chief financial officer all the time — when he asks for loans.

1:35 p.m.

Getting off the elevator, you’re almost blinded by the new bright blue carpeting.
