TORONTO - Who will win the AL East?

Since Joe Carter homered off Mitch Williams in 1993, the New York Yankees have finished atop the AL East 12 seasons, the Boston Red Sox have been on top three times, the Tampa Bay Rays twice and the Baltimore Orioles once. The end of the 1993 regular season and the World Series were cancelled to a work stoppage.

The Jays are oh-for-20.

Is it time for the fifth member to win the AL East?

We asked baseball people we saw in Florida and Arizona, during spring training rounds and the World Baseball Classic.

“I’ll tell you how good the Jays are going to be,” said Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster Gary Matthews, “they’ll be so good the president will stay for all nine innings — no sneaking our after six or seven .”
