Whole lotta pressure on Jays manager Gibbons
By STEVE SIMMONS, QMI Agency

DUNEDIN, FLA. - John Gibbons was sitting in his office just before lunch, relaxed as he always seems to be be, talking about his new position with the Blue Jays, his old position, and the one he thought he’d have this baseball season.

He had a choice really — to return his double-A job at home, with his family in San Antonio or take the job Alex Anthopoulos had offered him. Not this manager’s job — but one in pro scouting.

“I wasn’t ready to leave the field,” he said. “I just didn’t think anything like this would happen again.”

Like this means managing this Blue Jays team of enormous expectations.

The job that came out of nowhere.

He loves the position but worries about it. He comes across as absolutely relaxed yet admits to being nervous.

“The whole country is excited,” he said in a lengthy one-on-one interview.

Do you think MLB is taking it too far by having teams open the 2014 season in Australia?
