It’s less than six weeks until opening day, but it’s never too early to handicap who the winners will be when they hand out the major hardware at the conclusion of the 2013 season. The following is our top five list of potential American League MVP candidates in no particular order:

Jose Bautista Toronto Blue Jays

We’ll get this one out of the way amid shouts of “Homer.” For the past 21/2 seasons, though, Bautista has been among the elite players in the league. In his breakout year in 2010 when he slammed 54 home runs, he finished fourth in MVP voting. In 2011, he crushed 43 homers and finished third in the voting, compiling five first-place votes. A wrist injury last season restricted him to 92 games, but in that time he still managed to hit 27 home runs and drive in 65 runs. The wrist, of course, is the big question mark entering the 2013 season. Assuming he is healthy, the Jays’ revamped lineup should add to his totals.
