Jays' Buerhle a dog's best friend
Pitcher puts his pit bull Slater's best interests ahead of his own

Blue Jays pitcher Mark Buehrle will leave his wife, kids and dogs behind in Florida when the team heads north. One of his dogs, a pit bull, is banned in Ontario, prompting Buehrle's move. (Ken fidlin/Toronto Sun)

Any pet owner worth his salt knows that people don’t adopt dogs. Dogs adopt people. Not only that, but dogs directly reflect the character and integrity, the good and the bad, of their so-called masters.

If you believe that, then Mark Buehrle’s American Staffordshire Terrier named Slater must be quite a dog because Buehrle and his dedicated family treat their pet ownership as a privilege most precious.

Most folks know Slater’s breed by its more common name. Slater is a pit bull and for a lot of people in this world that sends a shiver down their spines and an image of brutality to their brains. It’s the reason that, this baseball season at least, Buehrle won’t be bringing his family to Toronto when he comes north to pitch for the Blue Jays.
