Jays' Gibbons will let Lawrie play his style

It’s music to Brett Lawrie’s ears. John Gibbons doesn’t want to change him. Not a thing.

Gibbons has a soft spot for Lawrie’s hell-bent-for-election attitude. He knows it’s a gift that only a handful of players have.

“I’m not going to tell him to back off because that’s what got him here,” said Gibbons. “That’s what put him on the map as an amateur. Three or four years from now, I’m sure he’ll slow down a bit but intensity is a big part of this business. Guys that have it, who can bring it every day, are often your better players.”

Now, John Gibbons may change his tune. He has not had the privilege of seeing Brett Lawrie try to steal home with two out and the two-time league-leader in home runs at the plate. Or risk life and limb chasing a foul ball into a deep, dangerous, cement camera well.

Do you think MLB is taking it too far by having teams open the 2014 season in Australia?
