Farewell Farrell, hello Mike Aviles

For letting John Farrell sign on with Boston, the Red Sox sent infielder Mike Aviles to the Jays. Here’s the scoop:

Age: 31 Bats: Right

Positions: SS, 2B

Born: New York

Drafted: By Kansas City Royals, 7th round, 2003

Free Agent: After 2014

Height: 5-foot-10

Weight: 205

Twitter: themikeaviles

Last season: 546 ABs (career high), .250 AVG, .282 OBP, .663 OPS, 13 homers, 60 RBIs, 14 steals.

Jays GM says: “It’s very hard to get middle infielders. If you look at the free agent market, it’s so thin at shortstop and second base ... He’s a hard-nosed player, a gamer, a high-energy player with some power ... He’s not without flaws (low OBP) ... I talked with him (Sunday) and, while I can’t say for sure what deals or acquisitions we are going to make, I told him he would be competing at least as a utility infielder.” — Alex Anthopoulos.
