TORONTO - Anthony Gose and Chad Beck arrived Tuesday to supplement the Blue Jays' expanded September roster but any further additions will come from players returning from the disabled list.

That list includes catcher J.P. Arencibia, who will play this week in Dunedin and could rejoin the Jays in Boston on Friday. It also includes first baseman David Cooper, who is scheduled to play with Dunedin this week, and it could include third baseman Brett Lawrie, who is close to appearing in game action again.

"J.P. (Arencibia) is getting closer. He's catching nine innings (Tuesday) in Dunedin. Scheduled for nine again (Wednesday)," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. "It's likely that Thursday we'll look to DH him, as long as games are still going on there. Then he becomes a possibility in Boston.

"Lawrie continues to feel improvement physically. We're hopeful that we can get him in a game before Dunedin is done. He's symptom-free, yes, to the extent of taking batting practice and taking drills. He's going through that full baseball activity now."

SIX-MAN ROTATION

The Jays have talked about going to a six-man September rotation, but with several off-days sprinkled through the schedule, that won't happen until the last 11 games of the season.

"We have a doubleheader on the 24th at Baltimore so the need for that additional starter exists there and then we'd run it out from that point," said Farrell.

Presumably, reliever Aaron Laffey would be added into the rotation mix at that point.

TRANSITIONS

Farrell doesn't expect Brett Cecil to have a difficult transition to the bullpen after spending six pro seasons as a starter. More than likely, Cecil will be facing a heavy diet of lefthanded hitters, who are just 7-for-37 against him this year.

"(Chad) Jenkins didn't take very long and he's done very well," Farrell said. "Brett has relieved in college, which is at a stage when he's in his late teens or early 20s. Whether we can get a full assessment in September, we'll get the best we can. There will be opportunities that we come up against, a combination of left-right-left in a three-hitter span where we might get a better read on it. Until we get a look over four or five appearances, we won't know how quick he can get ready and how he bounces back physically."

As a closer at Maryland University in 2006, Cecil had 13 saves.

SHORT HOPS

Farrell expects Gose will resume his informal platoon with Moises Sierra in right field, with Gose facing righthanded pitching while Sierra will be in against lefties ..... Kelly Johnson, whose 14 HR ranks second among AL 2B, is batting just .169 with 21 strikeouts over his last 18 games and just .187 over 42 games since the all-star break ... Omar Vizquel needs three hits to tie Babe Ruth for 40th place on the career hits list. Vizquel currently has 2,870.
