Villanueva gets Friday start
By KEN FIDLIN, QMI Agency
BOSTON - With the solid performance of Aaron Laffey on Tuesday, the apparently clean bill of health on Henderson Alvarez and the decision to start Carlos Villanueva on Friday, the Blue Jays starting rotation is settled for at least the next five days.
After Brett Cecil pitches Thursday against the Angels, Villanueva will start Friday, Alvarez is slated for Saturday and Laffey gets the call on Sunday, coming off six shutout innings Tuesday.
"Carlos did a good job for us last year and we felt his consistency, with the options currently available, gives us a better chance to control the game from the start, rather than finding us in a situation where we have to battle back in," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. "Carlos is experienced and equipped to stabilize the game right from the start."
Villanueva will be limited to somewhere in the 80-85 pitch range.
SERGIO'S SLOW PROGRESS
Sergio Santos, nearly three months into his recovery from shoulder inflammation, still is not close to getting back on a mound. Santos suffered a setback after working his way up to mound work in May and is back to playing catch on flat ground.
"It's been frustrating for him," Farrell said. "He increased the intensity, got back to the mound and then had the setback."
MRI tests have not revealed any structural damage but the areas of pain have come from various points in the shoulder capsule.
"We're all hopeful that there is not another setback because at that point we really have to re-assess what the next step is."
BOMBS AWAY JOSE
Jose Bautista's fourth-inning home run on Wednesday, a bomb that landed on a car in a parking lot across Lansdowne Street beyond Fenway Park's Green Monster, set a Blue Jays franchise record for home runs in a month.
Bautista's 13th June homer moved him past Jose Cruz, Jr., who hit 12 in August of 2001, and Carlos Delgado, who hit 12 in August of 1999.
On May 1, after 23 games, Bautista had a grand total of three home runs. In the 52 games since then, he has hit 22 to take over the league-lead with 25.
