TORONTO - The Jays will spend Monday's off day participating in a golf tournament at Bond Head for the Jays Care Foundation. Buses will take the team to the charter for their three-game series in Chicago and then it’s on to Atlanta and Milwaukee. Former MVP George Bell is in town for the tournament and will be paired with Blue Jays president Paul Beeston.
I Love LA: Jays lefty Ricky Romero, a Los Angeles native, was showing clubhouse personnel a clip of Los Angeles Kings defenceman Drew Doughty’s press conference after his goal in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup playoffs. “I met him when I was in L.A., he’s a big Blue Jays fan,” said Romero of Doughty, who hails from London, Ont. “When they win the Cup I’m going to have him throw out the first pitch and bring the Stanley Cup with him.” You mean if. “What do you mean if?” asked Romero. How are them Los Angeles Lakers making out? Interview over.
Jays right-hander Brandon Morrow, hit on the right shin by a comebacker against the Baltimore Orioles, threw his scheduled bullpen session Sunday and remains on track to make his next start.
Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine was asked if he was concerned about the safety of the batters when he finally came out to remove Daniel Bard, who hit both Yunel Escobar and Edwin Encarnacion in the second inning. “Yeah, with the second hit batter, he couldn’t throw the fastball on the outside part of the plate and they had right-handed hitters coming up,” Valentine said. “The last thing I want to do was see anyone get hurt. I didn’t know he was going to throw sliders against right-handers.”
Easy peasy: Lefty Darren Oliver came on in the eighth. He got Adrian Gonzalez to hit a 1-2 grounder to Brett Lawrie and then struck out David Ortiz looking at a 2-2, 88 mph fastball. And out came Blue Jays manager John Farrell. Another scoreless outing in the books as Oliver’s ERA dropped to 1.93.
Numbers: When Kelly Johnson walked to lead off the game it meant he’d reached in 22 of his previous 24 games and 41 of his 49 games this season ... David Cooper doubled and singled and now have five multi-hit games in his eight starts ... Seven of nine Jays shirts with Lawrie on the back on the way into the park.
