Romero left fuming after Maddon diss
By MIKE RUTSEY, QMI Agency
TORONTO - When informed of Joe Maddonís diss, Ricky Romero looked pissed.
Prior to the game Maddon, the colourful manager of the Tampa Bay Rays, told the media that if he had nine left-handers he could bat against Romero, heís use them.
Itís no secret that Romero, even though heís left-handed, has more trouble against lefties than righties. Last season, right-handers batted .194 against him while lefties hit him at a .269 clip.
Romero knows he has problems as well and worked hard through spring training at developing secondary pitches to use against left-handers.
On Tuesday, Romeroís mechanics were off but he collected the win. But he wasnít too happy with Maddonís comments.
ďHe can start nine guys for all I care,Ē Romero said. ďI really donít care what he has to say or what his mindset is against me. If he has nine lefties against me Iíll find a way to win, thatís just the bottom line.
ďThereís been days when those guys have been successful against me from the left side and thereís been days when Iíve come out on top. Like I said, he can do whatever he wants. Iím not worried about that, Iíll just go out there and pitch.Ē
Two of the three runs the Rays scored against Romero were driven in by left-handers.
