Expand playoffs? Sure, says Jays GM
By MIKE RUTSEY, QMI Agency

TORONTO - Asked to wear his fan hat and put his GM hat aside, Alex Anthopoulos expressed support for the concept of having an additional wild card team in both the American and National leagues.

“I know there’s been a lot of talk about an extra wild-card team and there seems to be a momentum towards that,” he said. “I was asking Paul that question before I came in here. He said he wasn’t sure. I know realignment is a little more challenging.

“I think there is enough momentum that at some point another wild card will be added. Realignment, you’re looking at ownership and I’m not that certain.”

He’s definitely a supporter of opening up the post-season to more teams.

“I think so at this point, I think anything that can mean more meaningful games in September (is a positive),” he said. “I think what we saw last night (Wednesday) is great. It’s the talk of the town across each city. It’s just exciting for the game.”

But he added that he missed out on all the craziness that happened in Atlanta, Baltimore and Tampa Bay.

“I went to bed early last night because I wasn’t feeling so hot,” Anthopoulos said. “I woke up at 12:30 (a.m.) and I didn’t know what had happened but my Blackberry blew up with ‘Wow’, ‘Unreal’ and ‘Incredible’.

“If adding a wild card in each league is going to add to more meaningful games in September and grow the sport, I’m all for it.”
