TORONTO - Left-fielder Eric Thames was in the lineup hitting second on Monday, despite fouling a pitch off his left eye Sunday afternoon against New York Yankees reliever Scott Proctor. “You can see the stitches from the ball,” Thames said, shutting his eyelid to slow an ugly welt. “Once in a while on a high pitch from a lefty I might get tied up on a high pitch,” Thames said. “That was the first time ever from a right-hander.” TO-DO LIST On Blue Jays manager John Farrell’s to-do list before the end of the season are getting Adam Loewen some more time in left field, as well as getting Edwin Encarnacion some time in the outfield as well. It could make for a crowded team picture in left next spring. Other potential left-fielders include Thames, Travis Snider, Adam Loewen and Rajai Davis. “I don’t think people should forget about Davis,” Farrell told reporters. “He hit .280-.300 the two previous years and he has an amazing skill set (speed).” Former Blue Jay Corey Patterson started 43 games in left field this season. Thames made his 43rd start there on Monday. Next came Snider (39), Juan Rivera (22), Davis (four), Mark Teahen (one) and Loewen (one). EVERYDAY BLUES After DHing most of his career, Adam Lind has started 105 games at first base. And he has begun to wear down with the duties of playing in the field, hitting .210 with three homers and 10 RBIs in July and .196 with four homers and 18 RBIs in September. “Where Adam gets in trouble,” Farrell told reporters, “is when he expands the strike zone. Defensively he’s far surpassed what we expected.” SORTING LAUNDRY With three series left this season, Farrell said there still was plenty to accomplish. “We’re still going with our vision to continue to try to make this the best organization in baseball,” Farrell said. “(GM) Alex (Anthopoulos) has been steadfast in his plan. “We’re not going to get to the final day of the season and it’s going to be: ‘OK, shirts in one pile, pants in another.’ ”
