TORONTO - Juan Rivera was acquired Jan. 21 from the L.A. Angels along with Mike Napoli for Vernon Wells and his contract. Napoli was dealt to the Texas Rangers for closer Frank Francisco, and Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos has been trying to trade Rivera, who was drawing the team’s second-highest salary ($5.25 million), for the previous 159 days.

With Rivera designated for assignment — on his 33rd birthday — the Jays have 10 days to work out a trade (unlikely) or have someone claim him on waivers (highly unlikely). Either way, Rivera gets his dough.

“We’re getting near the non-waiver trade deadline,” Anthopoulos told reporters. “We might be able to work something out, a few teams have asked about him.”

Rivera was hitting .247 with six homers and 28 RBIs in 70 games. He was hurting the team in the field.

Snider gets the call

Travis Snider, a former first-round pick, was demoted at the end of the 2008 season, again the next year; again last year and again this year.

Manager John Farrell said this time the Jays are going to stick with Snider, who was elevated from triple-A Las Vegas Sunday and will be in Fenway Park’s spacious right field Monday. Like Brett Lawrie before him, the Jays were about to elevate him when Snider was injured (concussion).

“Travis has precipitated this move,” Farrell said.

Snider was 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and an RBI playing right in a 10-2 win on Saturday against Colorado Springs, 3-for-5 with a double in a 9-7 win playing centre Friday, and hitless in three at-bats in a 2-1 win Thursday as the DH.

“He could see some time in centre, get some at-bats as a DH too,” Farrell said of Snider, who is hitting .333 with two homers, 29 RBIs and an .891 OPS.

McGowan update

Scheduled to work either two innings or 35 pitches in his first rehab start for Dunedin, Dustin McGowan lasted two-thirds of an inning Saturday. He allowed three runs on three hits and a walk, throwing 33 pitches.
