Arencibia still struggling

DUNEDIN, Fla. — The struggles continue for rookie catcher J.P. Arencibia.

While his work behind the plate is coming along fine, Arencibia has been in a rut at the plate.

In Saturday’s victory over the Pirates, Arencibia collected his first RBI of the spring on a sac fly to left. On the afternoon he was 0-for-3 and is 2-for-26 (.080) in 10 games this spring.

Manager John Farrell, however, is not concerned about his bat.

“With every position player you like to see that progression as far as quality at-bats continue to grow,” he said. “I think there’s been times where J.P. has been a little over-aggressive early in the count where he hasn’t fully trusted his abilities. We feel he’s going to hit. He’s got a good swing. However, there’s been some times early in camp where he hasn’t got it quite started on time, where his timing has been a little bit off.

“But he knows that we’re committing to him and to trust that and trust his abilities and go out and just let his abilities play rather than forcing the issue.”
