DUNEDIN — Not many people paid attention as Deck McGuire, the Jays’ top draft choice last year, and a catcher started off toward one of the distant diamonds for a mound session.

Not until somebody noticed the No. 6 on the back of the catcher.

Yes, that would be everybody’s favourite Blue Jay utility infielder, John McDonald, behind that mask. It’s not the first time McDonald has worn the tools of ignorance and it won’t be the last.

“We’ve talked with Mac the last few days about this,” said manager John Farrell. “We’re also going to get him into a B game as a catcher. Now some might say that’s a risky move if he catches a foul ball on the hand in a B game.

“But he is our third catcher when the season opens. He’s caught bullpens in the past. Today he caught behind the plate. We’ll get him in a B game just for him to see the speed of the game. We’ll have him handle a pitcher he’s familiar with.”

After Saturday’s workout, the Rawlings glove representatives were showing their wares outside the Jays clubhouse. McDonald ordered two catchers’ mitts.
