STILL SMILING
Blue Jays lefty Ricky Romero still was on a high on Wednesday, one day after he flirted with a no-hitter in his start Tuesday against Chicago. Romero gave up just one hit -- a two-run home run in the eighth -- and collected his first win of the season.
"I must have got 50-60 text messages of congratulations from back home. I've never had so many before," Romero said. He added that he wasn't beating himself up for hanging a changeup to Alex Rios, the pitch that ended his no-no. "I'm still on Cloud 9, I'm thinking: 'Did this just happen?' I was six outs from throwing a no-hitter."
CANUCK CLAIMED
The Jays announced Wednesday they had claimed New Westminster, B.C.'s Shawn Bowman on waivers from the New York Mets. A third baseman, Bowman spent 2009 with Binghamton of the double-A Eastern League where he hit .294 with 29 doubles, nine homers and 44 RBIs. He was originally drafted by the Mets in the 12th round of the 2002 June draft. Bowman was optioned to class-A Dunedin.
NO-HIT STUFF
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Jays are the first team in 20 years to hold a team hitless for at least six innings twice within the first eight days of a season. Shaun Marcum held Texas hitless into the seventh inning on opening day while Ricky Romero took a no-hitter into the eighth on Tuesday.
