DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Mike McCoy is all of 5-foot-9 standing on his tip-toes but he has come up big where it counts -- in the estimation of general manager Alex Anthopoulos.
McCoy, an all-purpose infielder, can also play centre and has plenty of speed to come off the bench in the late innings to steal a base and put his team into scoring position.
Given the way Anthopoulos raves about him, it seems he is a lock to nail down the 25th and final roster job as one of the team's four backups. Catcher Jose Molina, shortstop John McDonald and designated hitter/first baseman Randy Ruiz should be the others.
"You look at the stats and McCoy's at .600 or something (.615, 8-for-13) and he's played great. He's definitely opened some eyes," Anthopoulos said. "We were excited about him when we claimed him but hardly anyone expected what he's done."
