Brett Cecil's bid to win a job in the Blue Jays' starting rotation has hit an early snag.
The left-hander had to be scratched from his scheduled two-inning appearance in Thursday's game between the Jays and the Detroit Tigers in Lakeland because of a cut on one of the fingers of his pitching hand.
"He did something to it in a kitchen-type accident," said pitching coach Bruce Walton, who did not indicate the injury was serious.
Cecil was unavailable to provide additional details.
With stiff competition for jobs on the big-league pitching staff, a physical setback could work against any candidate. Up until Wednesday, Cecil has looked very strong in his outings during the first week of camp.
