Menechino injured

The last thing the offence-starved Blue Jays can afford right now is to lose any of their run producers.

But it's probably going to be two or three days before Frank Menechino, the owner of the only Blue Jays home run in the past 10 games, is able to play again.

Menechino started yesterday's game as he does against most left-handers as the Jays designated hitter. But in his only at bat of the afternoon, Menechino took a Scott Kazmir fastball off the side of his left knee.

"That's the worst spot I've ever been hit," Menechino said, still unable to put much weight on it after the game. "There's not a lot of meat right there. It's all tendons and it really hurt."

Menechino took his base and stayed upright but it was a struggle.

"I'm just glad he didn't throw over there because I probably would have fallen down trying to get back to the bag."

Adding insult to injury is the fact that the Jays will be facing another left-hander today in Baltimore's Bruce Chen, a start Menechino would get were he healthy.

HOPE ON THE HORIZON

The prospect of facing the Tampa Bay Devil Rays is rarely cause for too much concern, but Jays manager John Gibbons suggested that might change in the near future. Teams have always hated dealing with the Rays team speed that can be a defensive nightmare, but there was always the subpar pitching to counter-balance that.

Having seen Seth McClung and Scott Kazmir perform this weekend, Gibbons doesn't believe the Devil Rays are far away from changing that perception.

"You get Kazmir and McClung cranking, I'll tell you what, if they get their starting rotation in order, they're a dangerous club," Gibbons said.

BRIEFLY

Just call him Hardluck Bush. The Jays have been beaten 1-0 on two occasions this year. Both times David Bush has been the pitcher to take the loss. Both losses have come since Bush returned from a two-month stint in the minors. Since his return, Bush is 4-3 with a 3.23 ERA ... Reliever Jason Frasor has now struck out 13 batters over his past six outings.
