Ted Lilly goes for Round 2 in his rehab program tonight when he is scheduled to pitch for triple-A Syracuse in Pawtucket. It would mark the Blue Jays left-hander's second minor-league rehab start and first since last Friday when he hit three batters.
Lilly is expected to throw 60 to 65 pitches.
But with the remnants of Hurricane Katrina expected to bring rain to the New England area tonight, his rehab start could be pushed back a day or two.
If poor weather is in the Syracuse forecast, Lilly could instead make the start with Dunedin of the single-A Florida State League.
LEADOFF LAUNCH PAD
Brian Roberts of the Baltimore Orioles led off last night's game with a home run to right off Dave Bush.
It was the fifth time this season it has happened to a Jays pitcher. It was the fourth leadoff homer of the season for the Orioles second baseman and the second time this season he has done the deed against Bush. The first was April 23.
ARIZONA BOUND
The Jays announced yesterday they will be sending six players to the Arizona Fall League, which is an extended season for each organization's more highly prized prospects.
The players picked are:
- Catcher Guillermo Quiroz, who is now with the major-league club after missing most of the season with a collapsed lung;
- Second baseman Ryan Roberts (.267, 15 HR, 43 RBI with double-A New Hampshire);
- Catcher Erik Kratz (.207, 10, 33 with New Hampshire);
- Right-hander Steve Andrade (3-2, 3 saves, 1.97 ERA with New Hampshire);
- Right-hander Bubbie Buzachero (4-3, 3.82 with New Hampshire);
- Outfielder Adam Lind (.311, 12, 80 with single-A Dunedin).
READY TO RUMBLE
Tonight, Jays lefty Gustavo Chacin gets his last shot at breaking his goose egg for August. Heading into tonight's game, Chacin is 0-2 with three no-decisions in five starts this month. In his previous start, last Thursday in New York, Chacin surrendered a career-high six earned runs. In July, Chacin was 5-0 in six starts.
On the season Chacin is 11-7 with a 3.62 earned-run average. At home, he is 7-4 with a 3.55 ERA in 13 starts.
