When the American League East was not the least — and not there for the taking — the New York Yankees would make a move.

Within days the Boston Red Sox would counter. The Yankees would respond. On and on it would go until rosters were frozen.

Now the two arms-race combatants are the Oakland A’s and the Detroit Tigers.

Tired of losing Game 5 of the AL Division Series to Justin Verlander the last two years, A’s general manager Billy Beane acquired lefty Jon Lester from the Red Sox on Thursday morning.

Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski jabbed back a few hours later by obtaining lefty David Price from the Tampa Bay Rays.

How do you like the Tigers rotation which contains the last three Cy Young award winners in Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander and Price, plus Anibal Sanchez and Rick Porcello?

The A’s will respond with Lester, Jeff Samardzija, Sonny Gray, Scott Kazmir and either Jesse Chavez or Jason Hammel.
