For the second time in three days, Manny Machado was at the centre of a benches-clearing incident Sunday.

After the Baltimore Orioles third baseman caused a scuffle Friday by throwing his helmet toward Oakland Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson following a tag-out, Machado appeared to let his emotions get the better of him again and was ejected Sunday for intentionally tossing his bat into the A’s infield.

One pitch after Oakland reliever Fernando Abad nearly hit Machado’s surgically repaired knee with a low fastball in the eighth inning, Machado’s bat flew from his hands toward the field after it looked like the ball had passed. The lumber landed at third base.

The benches and bullpens cleared. Machado and Abad were both ejected.

“The bat slipped out of my hands,” Machado told reporters. “I was trying to make contact and the umpire thought it was intentional and he tossed me at that point.”

Umpire crew chief Larry Vanover offered his explanation.

“It was obvious the pitcher threw at him the second time,” Vanover said. “The first time you have some doubt, but the second time there was no doubt he threw at him. And then he threw the bat. That wasn’t accidental. He threw the bat, so two ejections.”
